Hi everyone, I'm writing from Italy. I have a MAUSER HSC with serial number 970544. Can you help me to date this gun? Under, near the releasing button of magazine there is written the number '1027'.
Small parts on many of these very late phosphate pistols are usually a mix of older blued parts and later phosphated parts. HScs with frames and slides of different finishes may exist and would be extremely rare and desirable to military collectors.

On the Mauser model 1910 pistols, this lug has a more pointed appearance. The photograph on the right is a picture of a crown over the letter U stamp. This stamp is located behind the rear sight as seen above, and on the front barrel lug opposite from the pistol's serial number. This crown of the letter U stamp became law on April 1, 1893 and is the final or definitive proof. This mark has not been in use since the proof law of 1939 became effective in Germany. The new proof law appeared in the Reichsgesetzblatt(Reich Law bulletin) No. 126 on July 15, 1939.
Type 1 up to serial number 365900 the right side of the slide was stamped “Mauser-6.35”. Type 2 serial number 300 the right side of the slide was stamped “Cal-6.35”. Type 3 serial number 300 the right side of the slide was stamped “Cal-6.35 D.R.P.u.A.P.”. 1910/34, Manufactured from 1936 to 1941, serial number range 400.

The new proofing law stuck with the old concept that no small arm which has not been proofed by a state recognized proof house can be brought into general commerce and cannot be sold if it does not bear appropriate proof marks. Each firearm that has passed proof firing must be marked with the suitable mark or stamp.
Production was continued in 1945–46 during the French occupation and, later, from 1968 to 1977. It features a semi-exposed hammer, double-action trigger, single-column magazine, and a spring surrounding the barrel. The Mauser HSc was originally intended as a commercial pistol.
Indicates Aktiengesellschaft or literally translates to corporation. German companies that are publicly traded are designated by the letters 'AG' after the company name. The letters 'A.N.' At the end of the top line is an abbreviation of 'am Neckar' which indicates on the river Neckar. This is an important marking as there are several Oberndorfs in Germany and Austria, but there is only one Oberndorf on the river Neckar in Germany.
Some have opined that this is “Art Deco,” but as a practical matter, it might make the HSc easier to quickly re-holster or slide into a pocket. Finally, the Mauser used the older German “heel-catch” magazine release, while the Walther twins used the still prevalent Browning style button release. Production began in 1940 at approximately serial number 700,000 as an extension of the Model 1934’s serial range. They were produced for both the German police units as well as the Kriegsmarine (Navy) and Wehrmacht (“Heer”– Army) as adjunct standard to the existing supply of the Walther pistols. Roughly 250,000 were built during WWII. After the war, the Oberndorf factory was occupied by the French, and they built a quantity between 1945 and 1946 before razing the factory.
At approximately serial number 701345 the grip screws were relocated upward to a more central and sturdier position. The began HSc procurement with an initial order for 3,000 pistols in early 1941, beginning with serial number 701,345, and, intermittently, ending about #712,000. These pistols are marked with an Eagle/655 inspection stamp on the left rear trigger guard web, a factory firing proof Eagle/N on the right rear trigger guard web and at the front of the right slide. Also a small Army Test Proof stamp was stamped on the left rear grip tang. Subsequent orders were placed by the Army throughout the war, along with pistols procured by the Police and Kriegsmarine, with almost 24% of the total production of 252,000 pistols going to the commercial market.
On the other hand, for a time Heckler & Koch sold an obvious HSc knockoff with their multicaliber “HK4” pistol – a piece of junk if there ever was one, made of stampings (The Germans called them “metal pressings”) tack welded together. An HK4 was the only pistol I ever personally examined with a broken frame. •: I agree wwith 'Trumped.' All serial number ranges have been approximated on available data. You may notice that some serial number ranges overlap. This occurs because Mauser continued to produce examples with features of an earlier model after production of examples of newer models had begun. Please feel free to reply with your comments as I am most interested in feedback from the collecting community. Thank you in advance.25 Cal Mauser Pocket Pistols model designations Mauser did not officially designate model names for these pistols they are commonly referred to as 1910 model Mausers regardless of caliber. Authors, researchers and collectors further derived model designations based on the earliest year of significant change in appearance.

On this site, I refer to all variants of the pistol as the C-96, due to habit more than anything else. The name Bolo is common but not standardized. I use it for any C-96 with a small grip and short (3.9 inch) barrel.
All other dates have been supplied after the fact, too often by collectors with more enthusiasm than accurate data. So classification by date isn't entirely satisfactory. By Serial Number Classification by serial number doesn't work all that well either. Although the Mauser serial number system is simple in theory - start at 1 and go up to whatever - it was violated in practice.
To finish up the mysterious case of number 232232: The best theory is that 232232 started life as an ordinary Prewar Commercial, but was returned to the factory for a defective safety. She was then retrofitted with the New Safety hammer and safety lever. Since the only differences between the Prewar and Wartime commercial guns were those two parts, 232232 was magically transformed from a Prewar to a Wartime Commercial. Perhaps that's how it happened, but absent a paper trail, we can't say for sure. By Feature Classification by feature is useful, as it's purely phenomenological.
The polish of these pistols is rougher and the military 'dusk blue' is now in evidence. The cross hatched machining inside the top sight channel is no longer there. The last variation, of some 32,000 intermittently numbered pistols in a serial number range of about #886,000 to #952,000, has the three-line device on the left side of the slide and bears an Eagle/WaA135 acceptance and the Eagle/N proofs.
After the war, production resumed starting at number 200000 and ultimately went over 426,000, which included the so-called 1910/34. That deal borders on highway robbery. • The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts. Join us to discuss firearms of all kinds, gun accessories, legal issues and more.
However M-30 is almost an official Mauser designation, as is Schnellfeuer (more properly, Schnellfeuer-pistole). The unofficial names used by modern collectors are relatively well-known but vary somewhat in practice.
The bottom line tells us that the pistol is made under patents that the Mauser firm holds. The serial number is found on the four main steel parts on this model 1914 pistol. These include the full serial number on back end of frame, the full serial number on the front left side of the slide, the last four digits of the serial number on the front barrel lug and the last four digits of the serial number on the bottom of the left side plate and next to the trigger. The picture on the left shows the barrel removed from the pistol. The front lug at the bottom of the barrel and under the front sight has the last 4 digits of the serial number on one side while the other side is stamped with the crown over the letter U proof mark. At the rear of the barrel, the back lug is flat on the bottom.
Military and police pistols were usually issued with two magazines and a small leather full-flap holster much as other German service pistols. In the collector world, they are usually quite a bit less expensive to acquire than the Walther, thus a bit of a bargain.•. Having fired both, I prefer Mauser’s HSc to Walther’s more famous PPK, which owes most of its fame to Ian Fleming’s “James Bond” character. The original HSc in.32 ACP (7.65mm) is a really reliable little gun.
In the text at the top of this page it was discussed how Mauser redesigned the model 1914 pistol which became the model 1934. One of the major changes was the shape of the grip to fit more comfortably in the hand. Take notice that the back of the grip frame on this model 1914 pistol which looks nearly identical to that of the model 1934, is not curved and that the new design is done solely with the wood or plastic grip and not the frame. Despite popular belief, the vast majority of these guns are semi-autos. There is a full auto or machine gun version, but those are rare in the United States, and must be registered as machine guns. A hefty number of these full autos have been remanufactured as semi-autos and imported into the US over the last twenty years or so. These remanufactured guns are not machine guns and do not have to be registered as such. Mauser made some relatively weird semi-auto variations in the early days of production, but after 40,000 or so guns, things settled down, and the factory thereafter manufactured only five major varieties of semi-autos.

Final German World War II production ended with the capture of the Oberndorf area by American troops in late April 1945. After the area was given to the French production resumed for French use and was concluded in 1946. Military personnel of all ranks not issued sidearms often purchased HSc pistols in the commercial marketplace and carried them in the field. Such commercial pistols often returned with veterans as World War II war souvenirs, often in military proofed HSc holsters. Distribution of total HSc pistol production (1940–1945): • Army (Heer): 137,121 (54.4%) • Navy (Kriegsmarine): 27,100 (10.8%) • Police (Polizei): 28,300 (11.2%) • Commercial (Civil): 59,467 (23.6%) • Total: 251,988 (100.0%) The HSc pistols made by the French in 1945–46 bear an RW proof.
Mauser skipped some sizeable blocks of numbers in the early days, sometimes filling them in subsequently with later-production pistols. And some contract guns had their own serial numbers, starting again at 1. The Schnellfeuer had its own series, also starting at 1.
Ergonomically, the Mauser HSc Pistol has a larger grip with a slightly higher bore axis than the Walther pistols, and its shrouded hammer also ensures there’s no hammer bite. The rear grip contour locks the pistol into my hand a bit more nicely than the rather flat Walther PP’s. The Mauser HSc Pistols pre-dated the modern designed jacketed hollow point bullets, and thus are only truly reliable with hardball.
Beginning in the late #940,000 range some pistols were given black plastic grip panels. The very last pistols, in the #949,500 to #952,000 range, were finished with Mauser's phosphate finish, somewhat similar to the U.S. Parkerizing finish used on most M-1 rifles, M-1 Carbines and M1911 pistols.
Mauser Pistol Serial Numbers
There are some folks who see something rare or unusual in serial numbers that end in two or more zeros and will pay more for them. Myself, I can't understand how 256000 is any better or worse than 255999 or 256001, but to each his own. In any case, that gun is referred to as the Post-War (WWI) Commercial 1910, and is the most common of the.25 caliber Mauser pocket pistols. Serial numbers of the original production started at 1 and went to c.

By serial number? All choices have drawbacks. By Date Unfortunately, most Mauser production records were destroyed when French occupation forces demolished the Oberndorf factory and offices after WW2. There have been attempts to blame this vandalism on American troops, but for several reasons I don't buy it.
