Data was succeptable to corruption from many factors -- defective storage media, unpredictable anomalies from unstable software and hardware, power outages, operator error, and later, computer viruses. During this same time period, before tape drives became popular with PCs, most backup programs backed up files to floppy disks. These programs were good for small amounts of data but impractical for larger businesses. 100MB of data requires 285 360K floppies, 84 1.2MB floppies, 139 720K floppies, or 70 1.44MB floppies. Even one corrupted floppy disk in a backup set could mean losing data forever if other backups were not made and the primary data source was compromised. The one weakness all computer systems share is the vulnerability of its data.

• nvr Stands for nonvolatile random-access memory and is where PCem keeps the emulated machine save states, such as BIOS changes. • roms ROMS are where PCem keeps the read-only BIOS programs. The BIOS is a program that tells the computer how to boot and launches the operating system. As a BIOS is copyrighted software, PCem does not package them.

For this reason, I have chosen to emulate a running version 2. It is a well-documented and simple system with a lot of resources online.

This is the second release of Tandy's GUI-based 'Personal DeskMate' series.
